2019 -2021 Stigma and HIV
Grant application in process with NIH for joint funding of a program in Namibia under the auspices of the University of Namibia School of Medicine and Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. I am part of the team lead by Dr. Francine Cournos from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and by Dr. Christian Hunter from University of Namibia School of Medicine, Windhoek, Namibia. The purpose of the grant is to study the effects of stigma on the presentation, diagnosis, follow-up, and obstacles to the effective diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Namibia.
2016 - 2021 University of Namibia, School of Medicine
Organizing and teaching in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurophysiology. Beginning in 2016, I have been teaching and helping to organize the medical student undergraduate program in psychiatry at the University’s new medical school (first class graduated in 2016). I have also initiated a project with the goal of establishing a post-graduate residency training program in the Department of Psychiatry. In addition to teaching in the undergraduate program, I will be teaching post graduate medical education programs in Windhoek, Namibia beginning July 2018. The aim is to lay the groundwork for a collaborative program between the Departments of Psychiatry and Global Mental Health at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Namibia, School of Medicine. I have been in ongoing communication with Dr. Kathleen Pike and Dr. Milton Wainberg at the Global Mental Health Program, with Dr. Francine Cournos, at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, and with Dr. Ronald Drusin, the Vice Dean for Education at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. The project envisions rotating two attending psychiatrists and one senior resident for one month every three months at the medical school campus in Windhoek, Namibia. This is a program modeled on the one that has been operating since 2002 between the University of Addis Ababa, School of Medicine in Ethiopia and the University of Toronto School of Medicine in Canada. I anticipate spending three to four months each year teaching and establishing the infrastructure for the program at the University of Namibia, School of Medicine.
2013 - present Human-animal conflict prevention, Kafue National Park, Zambia
Work with Game Rangers International to help minimize human-wild life conflict in and around one of Africa’s largest wildlife preserves. I am working on a project to increase the availability and use of electric fencing powered by solar panels so as to prevent elephants from destroying farmers’ crops. Farmers’ retaliatory rage at animals is a major source of poachers.
2002-2007 First Pitch, Imphal, India
I was one of the founding members of First Pitch – an organization that promotes sport – especially baseball (a long story but yes, baseball) in this remote, war torn, politically isolated corner of India. In addition to providing resources to play the game, we also provide medical information, access to health care, and because so many of the players are young women, information and resources concerning pregnancy, pre-natal and peri-natal health.
1979-1981 Pima Indian Health Services, Kino Community Hospital, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, Arizona
I was actively involved with providing direct psychiatric care and addiction services to the Pima Indian community.
